The African drumming and dance workshops are aimed at participants interested in African dance and drumming and in becoming members of a dance group(s) to showcase their work through performances. All dances will be based on African rhythms mainly accompanied by the drum.
Experienced African drummers and dancers resident in Leicester will conduct the workshops. Classes will be conducted twice weekly at the African Caribbean Centre and will be limited to a maximum of 16 participants per session.
Initially this programme will be divided into two distinct workshops, one for dance and the other for drumming. However there will be opportunities for persons with an interest in both to participate in both programmes.
Participants in the dance workshop will be encouraged to come up with ideas for dances and costumes to reflect the true spirit of Africa. This will be in addition to those choreographed by the tutor.
It is expected that with the variations in African drumming and dance styles that the workshop may be able to invite locally based dancers from other African countries to share some of their dances and stories behind them with our workshop participants.
